City Break Packing List

Everything you need for a perfect city trip — and nothing you don't. Comfortable shoes, smart evening clothes, and the tech to navigate like a local.

What you actually need to pack.

City breaks are the trip type most people overpack for. You don't need as many outfit changes as you think, you don't need a large suitcase, and you probably don't need that extra pair of shoes. What you do need: comfortable walking shoes that you've already broken in, a compact bag for days out, offline maps, and one smart outfit for a nice dinner. This checklist is deliberately minimal — because city breaks reward travelling light.

Before you start packing.

The things experienced city break travellers wish someone had told them before their first trip.

01
Break in your walking shoes before you go

This is the single most important thing on this list. New shoes plus 15,000 steps on day one equals blisters that ruin the rest of your trip. Wear your city shoes on long walks at home for at least two weeks before you travel.

02
Pack a compact umbrella — always

City weather is unpredictable. A compact folding umbrella weighs almost nothing and takes up minimal space. The alternative — getting soaked between metro stops — is miserable.

03
Download offline maps before you leave home

Google Maps and Apple Maps both support offline map downloads. Download the city before you fly. This means you can navigate without data roaming, which matters more than people think in underground areas, historic districts, and foreign networks.

04
One smart outfit is enough

Unless you have a specific formal event, one smart casual outfit covers dinner at any restaurant a city break tourist is likely to visit. You don't need three.

Common questions.

The most frequently asked questions about packing for a city break.

Can I do a city break with just a carry-on?
Yes — and you should. A 3–5 day city break fits easily in a 20–35L carry-on or backpack. Lightweight clothing, minimal shoes (2–3 pairs maximum), and travel-size toiletries is all you need. You'll move faster, skip baggage claim, and not have to think about checked luggage allowances.
What type of bag is best for a city break?
A 20–35L backpack or a small rolling carry-on both work well. Backpacks are better if you'll be on public transport a lot — easier to carry on underground systems. Rolling bags are better if your hotel has good storage and you're doing less moving around. For a weekend trip, a small backpack is ideal.
How many outfits do I need for a 3-day city break?
Three days, three tops, two bottoms (jeans or trousers layer well), one smart outfit, three sets of underwear and socks. That's it. Dark jeans are versatile — they work for walking around during the day and look smart enough for a good restaurant in the evening.
